Work Stress

Workplace anxiety is very normal. Work anxiety becomes a concern when it is excessive and affects your health and overall well-being. Do any or some of these apply to you: work long hours, have a demanding boss, feel a lack of control over your work, feel the pressure of managing others, have a high workload, feel that you have been treated unfairly, deal with workplace bullies or work in a toxic environment? While these factors may lead to workplace anxiety, the key is to determine if your anxiety is disrupting your life both professionally and personally.

So What are the Signs of Workplace Anxiety?

  • Work performance declines

  • Taking an unusual amount of time off

  • Lack of engagement in work

  • Poor work product

  • Overreacting or focusing on the negative aspects of your job

  • Physical symptoms - headaches, upset stomach, sweating, trouble sleeping

What Can I Do to Help with Work Anxiety?

  • Develop healthy habits - get enough sleep, exercise, eat a healthy diet, minimize caffeine and alcohol

  • Get organized and manage your time - use planners and timers

  • Communicate with your manager and team members if you need help with a project

  • Set boundaries - don’t bring your work home!

  • Take breaks - eat lunch away from your desk, take a short walk, and take those hard-earned vacation days!

  • Talk to your manager but only if you’re comfortable!

  • Talk to a therapist!

To Tell Your Employer or Not?

It’s the age-old question, should I tell my employer or not about my anxiety? Whether you tell your employer about your anxiety or not is always your decision. But know that depending on the severity of your anxiety at work, you may need work accommodations or even a leave of absence. The Americans with Disabilities Act protects individuals with mental or physical disabilities who are qualified for their job. You can check out your employee handbook or talk to your Human Resources department for more information on work accommodations and leave of absence policies.
